Transport in 2020

This time last year our industry had plenty to be happy about. Recent train operating franchise awards promised new trains, brighter stations and better journey opportunities. Transport for Wales Rail Services was working on its exciting plans for the rail network in South Wales and HS2 was about to receive final approval to cut the first turf. Local transport was not left out either.

The new Trafford Park line for Manchester’s trams was going to encourage public transport use and the government was about to announce a £5bn fund to overhaul bus and cycle links for every region outside London.

Public transport’s role in a dynamic, sustainable economy was plain to see.

Challenges

But clouding the outlook, there a were few signs of change. We were looking forward with anticipation and expectation of the Williams Review and the structural change it would bring to the rail industry. Commuting patterns, particularly into central London were changing as 5-day weeks and the rail franchising system was coming under significant pressure.

And then came Covid 19.

The challenges faced now by public transport operators and their suppliers are significant. Passenger confidence must be rebuilt, the industry must react to societal change and the way that our cities will work in future. The truth is of course that these pressures were emerging before the pandemic, but Covid 19 has accelerated them.

Challenges

Change through innovation

Scheidt & Bachmann has helped its customers through periods of change in the past with innovation and great quality products. Fifteen years ago, development of self-service ticketing helped the rail industry cater for significant growth and formed the vital fulfilment point for ticket on departure internet sales for instance.

These are testing times. Operators are looking for products and services that deliver flexible ticketing services and cost control. Our experience, heritage and local team focus mean we’re perfectly positioned to take you on that journey with a mix of the best ticketing hardware available right now and a flexible, realistic approach to the implementation of the best technology of the future.
